Increasing thread depth techniques.

Let's analyze the four methods of increasing thread depth in threading.

Come incrementare la profondità del filetto durante le operazioni di tornitura.

In this article, we analyze the four methods of increasing thread depth in lathe threading operations.

Radial Increment

This is the most common method of increment for short-chip materials. For long-chip materials, it's difficult to break or control the chip when it reaches the thread flanks. The significant heat generated at the tip by this increment method drastically reduces tool life. (see Figure 1)

Increment on One Flank, Constant or Modified

Angular increment programmed on the same angle as the thread flank. Although much less heat develops with this method, the rear flank of the insert removes very little material, causing work hardening in some materials and poor finish on the rear flank of the thread.

Modified angular increment to generate further processing on the insert edge and to maintain a slight chip flow with less heat at the tip. Highly recommended for most materials, although the incremental angle should be reduced on more abrasive materials to prevent work hardening. Recommended range 27 – 10° (Figure 2)

Alternate Increment on One Flank

Excellent for extended tool life. Many latest-generation CNC machines offer this programmed cycle, strongly recommended for most materials. One of the disadvantages is the loss of chip control in some applications. (Figure 3)
